Boxes Refurbished 2007 |
The grouse-shooting season starts
on August 12th, and continues until December. If there is any sign
of a shoot, or land management in progress, please letterbox in a different area
in order to avoid attention being drawn to our activities.
Treat all letterboxes you visit as
you would your own. Wrap everything carefully in any bags provided, sealing
where applicable. If possible put the inky stamp separate to the visitors book. Shut boxes tightly and hide, taking time to
camouflage properly.
Always obey the Code of Conduct to keep the name of Letterboxing free of criticism. (See below)
We have
introduced a
in
recognition of Letterboxing in the
Thanks to YT
and Nigel and all those who have put out and visited the boxes over recent
years.

visited, planted, cuckoos, wanderers etc.
To cover the

Well done to The Misbourne
Moorler who has
achieved his 101 finds and applied for his badge. Welcome to the 101 Club.
Boxes visited and in good condition:-
Boxes visited and refurbished:-
Moorland Crosses no.9 (114), Moorland
Crosses no.3 (58)
Boxes taken in and deleted:-
Western
Moors Cuckoo Nest (267)
has been temporarily taken in. I have never been very happy with its position
and feel it is too easily overlooked by the herdsman when he is feeding the
cows. I hope to have it resited shortly.
The Cuckoos The Leader (126k) and The
Letter (50k) have been found and are still circulating.

American Icons: Mark Twain ( )
From Sutton Bank follow signs pointing towards Sneck Yate towards the NW
direction. Follow path to first bench where there is an old broken lookout stand.
From the Righthand corner of bench at a 100 degree bearing, go 10 paces to base
of many limbed birch. Box #1 is hidden snugged in root fork, under branch and
rock.
American Icons: Kermit the Frog ( )
Continue down path until corner of horse field is visible. Go to second
tree on Right down along the side of the path. Behind it to the Right side in
the pile of loose rocks at base of derelict wall in pile of loose rocks is Box
#2.
American Icons: Mr Rogers ( )
Continue along path to a signpost saying 'for your safety keep to the
path.' About 11 paces past this sign there is a fir/pine tree on the Right.
Behind the trunk on the Left side under rocks is Box #3.
Bridging the Pond - UK (
)
From bridge SE 71 91 follow the track beside the water upstream, to the
second of two holly trees. From here cont. about 470p along the track to the
first two trees on RHS of path (rather than near the stream). Stand in middle
of the two trees with your back to stream. Box is under the middle of a large
boulder entwined in the roots of the LHS tree.
This stamp was planted to celebrate the connections between Yorkshire
letterboxing and Conneticut where American letterboxing began. N.B.
This is one half of a stamp image, the other half can be found near a bridge in
Conneticut. For clue to the Conneticut box please contact The Yorkshire
Tortoise.
British Wildlife: Otter ( )
Having established that the fairies are still calling after all these
years, the otter swam upstream to the bridge. From there he followed the track
first to a holly tree on this side of the beck, then to a large holly tree on
the opposite side of the beck. He continued roughly 470p to two trees, an Alder
and Hawthorne, keeping each other company on the RHS of the path. Next he went
38p along track to a single Alder on the RHS. Lastly 33p along track to a
nearly dead hawthorne on the L with a broken limb. Near base of trunk are two
boulders. Box under LHS boulder, behind moss on the RHS of the fern growing
from under the middle of it.

British Wildlife : Wildcat ( )
From Sutton Bank car park, follow path pointing towards Sneck Yate in a NW
direction. Continue down path, passing through a wooded section keeping small
lake on your left. When you come out of the wooded section and appear to be
passing the lake, you will come to a wooden gate on your right where two stone
walls meet in somewhat of a 'T'. On opposite side of the gate from the path
there is a signpost saying Bridleway - Dialstone Farm . Behind this signpost,
in corner where the two walls meet, is the box you seek. It is hidden at the
base under a pile of loose rocks
Pack Up Your Troubles. ( )
From the tower in the quarry with the carriage axel with 2 wheels still
attached, above the site of the old Scar house village. Follow the track
easterly, past a pyramid rock which could be mistaken for a trig, follow this
track around hillock to old grouse butt which is above several large boulders
that form a small wall. From this butt go down 5 paces on 210°. Box behind
small door under the eagle head rock, on side of grassy bank.
Scar House ( )
From main car park at Scar house reservoir, once parked walk back to the
vehicle entrance where concrete turns to tarmac. Head on ungated track on 110°
which starts between 2 gated tracks. Pass 5 foot wooden post on left up steep
hill towards quarry. Go to the tower at the entrance of the quarry, at the
front of the tower you will find a carriage axel with 2 wheels still attached.
From here go 69 paces on 235° to a corrugated stone slab by a metal plate with
three bolts. From here go 11 paces on 220° . The box is under sloping slab
behind double door.
The Lighthouse ( )
A lighthouse in Nidderdale, unlikely you may think, but study your map
closely and you will find Light Hill. Only a couple of miles northerly from
here is a gate in a wall at SE 147 725. From hinge side of gate the Lighthouse
box is 15 paces on 250° under stone at front of old wall.
Tarka’s Travels ( )
Tarka has settled near some hills that bear the name of his
kind. Park at Bank Foot (NZ59 06) and follow the gravel track up Ingleby Bank until a grassy semi-circle on right hand side.
If you reach a chain across the path you've gone too far. The semi-circle has a
small group of rocks above it, Tarka
is hiding under the 1st large rock on the right.

getting this Personal Traveller:-
1. When we meet tell me an English slang term

2. Look for a small box you would not expect me
to have and ask me why I have it.

There
are many good tutorials about carving stamps, which I cannot better, so I
have listed some links to help you at the bottom of this section. When I
started carving stamps myself I was taught that the scalpel type of hobby
knife was the preferred instrument for cutting, not lino gouges, and that is
what I have used ever since. Recently I have tried lino gouges, but still
find that I am unable to do any detailed work with them. I do however, find
them very useful for clearing out large expanses of material cleanly. You
will find that the tutorials recommend lino gouges, and if they work for you
that is great. Most of the advice applies to both ways of carving, so even if
the tutorial is describing a lino gouger it can still be related to a hobby
knife. I have
three bits of advice which I consider very important:- 1. Do
sit where the light is good, beside a window, or with a good strong light. It
really does make an enormous difference. 2. Do
not try to carve LETTERING until you have had more experience in carving. Lettering
is very difficult to carve and the results can be very off putting to a new
carver! 3. Do
take care with finding and copying your picture. The right picture and how
you copy it goes towards at least 50% of the final result. Stamp tutorials - everything you need

can be bought cheaply from W H Smiths in An

helpful if you need advice. Postage/packing
is comparable to Stamping:- One tip I have found very
useful when stamping images into my logbook is to put a folded piece of
kitchen roll underneath the page I am stamping. This helps iron out any
imperfections and gives a good stamped impression. HOW TO USE MULTICOLOURED STAMPS - Known in the letterboxing world as ‘huffing’ ! HOW TO USE DOUBLE SIDED STAMPS For more tips on stamping:- http://www.atlasquest.com/tutorials/stamping/stamping.html |
